After 16 hrs of traveling that included a red-eye, we arrived in San Juan at 3:00 pm (11:00 am in the Bay Area). By 6:00 pm it was dark, and once I had had dinner, I crashed. I tried to write but I was incoherent. But now that I’ve had 12 hrs of sleep, several allergy medications, and a shot of expresso with milk, I feel much better.
We are staying near Villa Palmeras, the neighborhood where my aunt lives, and part of the city of Santurce. There are no street lights in her part of the neighborhood. Today Sarah and I will go visit her and my cousin, a school teacher in Santurce. Just last night, as we were driving to a restaurant, we passed the empty shell of one of the schools that had closed. It was in Calle Loiza, described in Airbnb as an “up-and-coming” neighborhood.
It is 85 degrees here, and even though the forecast did not mention it, we also got some rain early last night. Rain of the kind that soaks you after just two minutes. Hoping the next few days are not completely rainy, since tomorrow I will have to drive to the art store to pick up some of my canvasses. This rain decreases visibility and makes traffic much slower. Today though, I will give myself a chance to recover from jet lag and the very long trip here.
