Great news! The East Bay Community Foundation gave us a grant that covers two thirds of the cost of the immigration-themed mural. The mural will be the first of several pieces of public art Groundwork Richmond hopes to install at the Pullman Portal Park in Richmond. This 480 sq foot mural will feature the positive contributions of Latino immigrants to the City of Richmond.
What makes this project so exciting is that it will be designed and painted by youth from Groundwork Richmond’s Green Team, and with the help of neighbors and other volunteers. I will act as facilitator and will help the youth create a mock-up to scale that we can present to the Neighborhood Council and others who might want to give feedback.
As a Latinx muralist, I believe artists do not exist in a vacuum. It is important to me and others to respond to the recent wave of separations and deportation of Latinx families with art that can uplift the community where I live and work.
