After nearly a month of intensive studying, reading numerous articles and watching countless tutorials, I was able to get this WordPress site going. While it is not much to look at (yet), its architecture represents the sum of weeks of labor, simply because…I am not a web developer or even a web designer. But isn’t it encouraging to know the help is out there, for free? I think this is one of the truly wonderful things about the internet, and why it is important to preserve our freedom to access information free of charge.
There was one thing I did pay for. I purchased the Striking Responsive theme for WordPress because its designers said it did everything I wanted it to do, and also, because newbies were supposed to be able to work with it quite well. It had good reviews. Striking was not that expensive, just $55. And there was lots to read in terms of support and tutorials. The only problem I had at times is that web developers write like, well, web developers. I imagine they are overworked people operating on multiple tight deadlines and without the benefit of a communications manager or someone who can proofread the instructions they churn out. So at times, reading their explanations was difficult not so much because it was technical, but because it was not all that clear. Other than that, I feel that the theme delivered. I look forward to reading more tutorials so I can tweak my site.
For now, I am just happy that everything works well, and that it is possible to learn what I need to learn in order to take over its maintenance.
